love
a fairytale ending?
Although she is an angel of love, Salvia doesn't exactly have the most active romantic life. As she is consumed by ideas of retribution, she dismisses the concept of personal romance almost completely. Or does she? In the OAV she has a passionate (but doomed) affair with a wealthy business man, while in the manga she finds romance during one of the volume six omake chapters. The girl might have sworn off love, but that doesn't mean love has forgotten her entirely!
Dean Butler
Scarlet's manga love interest is introduced in the volume six side story, "Scarlet Love". Dean is an American student who
visits Japan specifically to search for Scarlet. Although popular with girls, he is
only interested in pursuing Scarlet, whom he has known since childhood.
Dean is incredibly suave and flippant in his behavior but his feelings
for Scarlet are genuine. He states that he fell in love with Scarlet
at first sight after she portrayed an angel in a school play (some four years ago).
Scarlet resists all of Dean's advances for the majority of the chapter, even though her friends insist she and Dean make a perfect couple. Scarlet deliberately makes herself unavailable to Dean in the hope that he will stop pursuing her. After he declares his love for her on a carnival ride, Scarlet slaps him, irritated that he would say such an important line in a decidedly thoughtless manner, "A guy who always says what comes to mind, a guy who is always in a good mood - that's the type I hate most". It turns out that Dean is known for playing jokes on people and Scarlet is fearful that his haphazard affections are the cruelest joke of all.
Dean visits Scarlet later, hoping to say goodbye to her before he leaves for America again. He catches her looking at an old photo album containing pictures from her time in the school play. Dean notes that after her performance in the play, her personality changed dramatically ("You were always staring off into the distance as though you were deep in thought...") and he'd come to Japan to make sure her solitary suffering had come to an end. Dean suggests that Momoko, Yuri and Hinagiku have begun to change Scarlet back into the girl he remembers from childhood. As it turns out, Dean was right in his observation of the change in Scarlet - the tiara she wore for her performance was the Saint Something New and it awakened the original Angel Salvia inside her. Scarlet was flooded with terrible memories and felt compelled to find the angels from her visions.
Momoko
visits Scarlet and insists that she try to stop Dean from leaving, Scarlet
says she has no interest in Dean but her love waves are strong enough
to make the Saint Something Old glow. Momoko says she understands Scarlet's
need to put up a front and act indifferent, but Dean needs to know her
true feelings. Scarlet then agrees to go to the airport with her friends
however, when they arrive Dean's plane has already
started boarding. Scarlet becomes desperate and the four Saint Somethings
react, teleporting her to Dean's side. She begins to cry, "It
seems... I like you, no - I love you! I really love you! But I was mean
to you in spite of that..." and Dean kisses her, "You
chased me all this way! I was so surprised that for a moment, I thought
an angel had come down..." before leaving to catch his flight.
At the end of the chapter we see a glimpse of the future. Dean and Scarlet apparently continued their relationship after the close of "Scarlet Love" and they marry alongside the other main couples (Momoko/Yousuke, Yuri/Yanagiba, Hinagiku/Takurou) in the epilogue.
cLARK oASIS
Salvia's OAV love interest, introduced in the second episode of Wedding
Peach DX ("Salvia's Love... We'll Fight, Even on a Luxury
Liner!"). Clark is a top executive in the World Company
Group, whose business hosts a special dinner on a cruise ship to celebrate
a lunar eclipse. The love angels attend the event as per Scarlet's
request. Although initially coy on the subject of Clark (suggesting
he's "just another riding club member"), Scarlet eventually reveals her
connection with him in a flashback.
While out horse-riding one day, Scarlet came across Clark as he was being attacked by gun-wielding assailants. Scarlet rescued him but was grazed by a bullet in the process. Clark's personal guards intervened and held off the apparent assassins while Oasis tended to Scarlet. As this series of flashbacks denotes, their love affair began that day and Scarlet has been seeing Clark ever since.
Momoko approaches Scarlet with concern for her romantic livelihood, "Unlike us, you're a pure angel. You fought with the Devils for a long time, didn't you? That's why, from now on, you have the right to think about your own happiness". Touched by Momoko's comments Scarlet ponders putting her origins as a love angel aside in order to pursue Oasis. Just as she has a moment alone to consider her options with Clark, he appears and urges her to sit with him on the deserted upper deck. It is there that he presents Scarlet with an wedding ring which she hesitates in accepting, "There's something I want you to hear. You might not believe me but I... I... I'm..." at which point Clark interrupts her, "I know you're an angel, Love Angel Salvia".
Oasis then reveals his true origins - he is a fallen angel, driven from the heavens because of his radical ideas (before the war with Reine Devila he'd tried to assert that angels were supposed to rule over humans). Using the energy of the stars during the lunar eclipse, Clark hopes to gain enough power to rule the world (as well as marry Scarlet) before the eclipse concludes.
Scarlet says little at first but after
Oasis asks, "Those three (Momoko, Yuri, Hinagiku) are angels
and yet they are humans. Why do you, as a pure angel, fight alongside
them?" she pulls herself from his side. "Momoko
and the others released my heart, which had been closed by my hatred
of the devils". Although it is obvious Clark is consumed by
a lust for power, Scarlet asks him, "Did you get close to
me because you knew I was an angel?" to which he replies, "That's not why. I knew love for the first time after I fell
to Earth. And then I knew the reason. It's because you're a pure angel,
like me". Scarlet is trying to process Clark's response
when he slips the ring on her finger, brainwashing her.
Thankfully, the other love angels arrive just in time to pull the dazed Scarlet from Clark's clutches, but the lunar eclipse has already begun and it isn't long before Oasis morphs into a hideous demonic creature (owing to the "power" he so craved; according to Jama-pii, a fallen angel consumed by power becomes a devil). The angels have little choice but to fight the mutated Clark, with Scarlet still in a daze nearby. After watching her friends get severely injured fighting Clark, Scarlet breaks out of her stupor and transforms into Angel Salvia. With a tear-streaked face, Salvia eventually drops her swords and asks, "Is this what you wanted, Oasis?" but is saved from certain death by a quick-thinking Peach. The four then perform "Saint Grenade Critical Heart Impact" and return Oasis to his human form. Salvia then approaches him, "I wanted to meet you as a human" to which he responds, "I did too. I really did..." before mutating back into his devil form. Knowing he can never return to being an angel or human, Clark asks Salvia to kill him. She obliges.
The episode ends with Scarlet (clad in black) dropping the wedding ring Clark gave her off a cliff into the ocean. She turns to see her friends waiting for her and smiles.
