To coincide
with the broadcast of the anime series, a dragonaut -the resonance- manga began serialization in Jump SQ magazine during November of 2007. The
adaptation, written and illustrated by Kinoshita Satoshi, ran for a total of
six chapters (the last of which was published in Jump SQ's April 2008 edition).
After completing its magazine run a bound volume was released in May of
2008. The dragonaut manga carries over themes and characters from
the anime series but executes its plot in a different manner. The adaptation has not been licensed for US distribution.
Kamishina Jin is a sullen and serious teenager, the only person capable of standing against the invasion of Earth by Type-D dragons. His partner is the mindless but loyal Toa, a dragon Jin has shared a Resonance with. Although Jin treats Toa badly, she respects her master and vows to protect him from all harm. Other Dragonauts and their dragons appear over the course of the series, helping Jin and Toa in their battle to save the planet. And stuff.

Kitajima
Yuuri makes her first appearance in chapter one of the dragonaut manga. She is not
only referred to as a doctor (in charge of "Incubation Operations" and a dragon
nursery), but also as Jin's superior within the ISDA. Initially harsh in
her treatment of the hero, Jin manages to earn Kitajima's respect toward
the end of the first chapter after he risks his life to save her from a
Type-D dragon. Over the course of the next five chapters Kitajima continues her
work with the ISDA, lending her abilities to the Dragonauts whenever they
are required. She isn't good at expressing it, but she does genuinely care
about her underlings.
kitajima manga fun facts:
- Even though she speaks poorly of the Dragonauts much of the time,
as Nanami reveals in chapter three, it was actually Kitajima who selected them to
become Dragonauts.
- Kitajima invented the portable CSS device that protects Jin in
the fourth chapter.
- Kitajima had short, bobbed hair at the time of Kamishina Ai's death.
